PLETTENBERG BAY’S MAD FESTIVAL.

Music, Art, Drama.

If you are visiting the Garden Route between the 26th June and 13th July 2014 don’t miss out on Plett’s first annual MAD festival.  Fans, of all ages, of Music, Art & Drama will be spoilt for choice by the lineup of festival events.  The events are not limited to those mad about MAD but also include festivals for foodies, sports fanatics and twitchers alike.

Enjoy a festival of theatre, including drama, comedy, magic, song and dance at the Plett Fringe Festival.  All of the acts are to be presented at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, with the artists stopping en-route to the Eastern Cape to stage an extra performance in Plettenberg Bay.  The festival is in support of the Kids of Kurland Project, which raises funds for the children of Kurland Village, an impoverished community some 20kms east of Plett.

Shows include Big Girls, Think Twice, The Tree Show, More Herman Charles Bosman Stories, Memory, Dirt, Mr Johnson Presents and You Bet Your Life.  All will be presented at The White House, Plettenberg Bay.

Included in the drama are the Plett Kids of Kurland Fringe Theatre where the talented actors and actresses of the Tshisa Talent and Lunchbox Theater groups take to the streets for Plett Street Theatre.

Whether you are a fan of rock, modern, folk, reggae or jazz music the bands of Gary Thomas, Sharon Rose, Ben Badenhorst Acoustic, Wild Lettuce, Elastic Band, Ambient Bliss, Liquid Rock, Ben Badenhorst & Martin Wolfaardt will be performing at the Surf Café.  To make it even more special our local Musos will be performing over the weekends at the Market on Main.

Art exhibitions, catering for art lovers of all tastes, will be taking place all over Plett.  Lovers of contemporary art should seek out Myfanwy Bekker's Art Studio while those aficionados of Avant Garde should not miss the exhibition in the old Bitou 10 Room with public participation in experimental multimedia and interactive art.  Sculptures, glass and works of art covering a broad spectrum of subjects and diversified artists can be found at the Lookout Gallery.  Verandah Outdoor Living will be hosting an exhibition of artist Andrea François Vercingetorige Cristoforetti’s work.

Plettenberg Bay has a budding bubbly & wine industry with local graphic designers competing to produce the best collectable commemorative Plett Wine & Bubbly Poster.  Don’t miss out on viewing the works of these highly talented locals at the Plett Tourism Office at Melville’s Corner.

Plettenberg Bay is proud to host the first ever food and film festival to be held in South Africa.    The aim of the festival is to provide entertainment with world class films combined with gourmet culinary presentations - a mouthwatering pairing of food and film.  Films to be screened include Cooking History, Bottled Life, The Well, Dancing with Horned Ladies, Jiro Dreams of Sushi, Above the Heart, Land Rush, Seeds of Time & Babette’s Feast.   Top South African celebrity chefs will be presenting the foods around the themes explored in the films guaranteeing a totally sensory experience for all.

Emily Moon River Lodge overlooks the winding Bitou River and wetlands below.  The name Emily Moon is the story of the love affair between Harry Mallard and Emily Moon, intrepid adventurers and hunters in Africa.  Harry lured Emily Moon back from her adventures to the breathtaking scenery and paradise of wetlands and the Bitou River with love letters written from the porch of his home where he had set up a permanent camp. Since the arrival of the sooty falcon, Falco concolor, spotted in a tree on the grounds, the lodge has become a destination for birdwatchers from around the world.  Emily Moon is the perfect venue to view the concept proposals and models of the Site Specific Land Art artists for the new Plett Birding Route bird hides.  Contact Emily Moon on www.emilymoon.co.za.

2014 marks the third year of the Tour de Plett Mountain Bike Marathon - every mountain bikers dream.  The ride takes place through spectacular scenery, challenging climbs, unspoilt forest tracks of indescribable beauty with a final stretch through the Buffalo Hills Game Reserve where cyclists can rub shoulders with giraffe, wildebeest and antelope.

The Tour de Plett Mountain Bike Marathon, comprising a marathon of 75km, a half marathon of 50km and a fun ride, is worthy of the country’s best cyclists and forms part of the SWD marathon series as the 5th race in that series.  Proceeds from the race go to the Plettenberg Bay Cycling Academy for disadvantaged children.

For the super cool no matter what age or stage in life why not head off to the Wedge Classic held at The Wedge next to Hobie Beach.  The Wedge Classic is the final event before the SA championships on the SA Body Boarding Association circuit and the longest standing body boarding event in South African history.  See some of South Africa’s most talented body boarders in action, waves permitting!
