Helen Melon Properties Fuels Hospice Plettenberg Bay

By the Community for the Community

When we started Helen Melon Properties(HMP) in 2013 we set ourselves a few goals to help us achieve what we wanted. We knew that if we offered a professional, knowledgeable service that people would support us. But, because we also live in the area that we work in, we wanted to become as much a part of the local community as our clients.

As our business has grown, so has our commitment to getting involved in the community, giving back when we can and making a positive impact.

While we do support several worthy causes, one that is particularly special to us is the Plett Aid Foundation, which provides a hospice service, as well as a screening and testing service for chronic and preventable illnesses in the broader Bitou community.

HMP first got involved with this organisation last year, donating significantly towards their fuel costs, which we will continue to do in the future. But hopefully, with your help, we’ll soon be able to cover their entire fuel costs for the year. We encourage all our clients to assist if they can, whenever they can. Every little bit helps a lot.

We were recently invited to spend the day with the Plett Aid Foundation and it was a privilege to meet their amazing dedicated staff and array of patients. Knowledgeable and kind, the staff don’t see those that are being treated as patients but as people, and they take care of them like friends. Plett Aid Foundation makes a real difference to the lives of families in the community.

The foundation operates two core programmes: The Plett Wellness Programme, a mobile health promotion and illness prevention service, and Hospice Plett, a palliative home-based care and residential support for people diagnosed with a life-limiting illness.

The range of services offered by The Plett Wellness Programme includes:

  • Diabetes and hypertension screening,
  • Cancer & TB screening,
  • HIV testing,
  • Medical male circumcision,
  • Condom distribution,
  • Nutritional status screening,
  • Family planning services

Carers live within the communities they serve, ensuring a high level of trust and confidence between patients and their carers, enabling them to provide culturally appropriate care. The level of trust established between patients and carers also allows the carers to discuss the needs and future care of vulnerable children in the household.

Some interesting statistics from 2016

  • In 2016, 131 new patients were admitted into care

  • A staggering 9302 home visits were made to both patients and family members, providing much needed treatments/interventions.

  • 44443 Clinical/medical, psycho-social, and spiritual treatments were carried out.

Helen Melon Properties is proud to be supporting the Plett Aid Foundation. During 2016, we covered 50% of their fuel costs allowing them to allocate their funds to other much needed areas. By supporting the Plett Aid Foundation we hope to assist them in their quest to help uplift the quality of life of the Bitou community by promoting health and wellbeing for all, and by providing dignity in death for the terminally ill.
